Writers' Residency
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Can you put me in touch with Stephen King?
No. Stephen has no public contact information and we will neither provide that information to you nor forward on messages to him. Stephen King’s Official Website is the best place to find information about Stephen, his books, and his movies and shows.
Is the STK residency accessible for writers with disabilities?
While we have some accommodations in place (such as a ramp to access the house and an elevator that travels to all three floors), the historic property is not fully accessible at this point. We continue to do work to make the house more accessible. If you have specific questions about whether we would be able to accommodate your needs, please contact us before applying.
Does the STK residency at the Brown mansion allow animals?
We welcome service animals that meet the definition in the Americans with Disabilities Act. We do not allow emotional support or comfort animals that do not directly support tasks related to a person’s disability.
How and when are notifications sent?
We will confirm receipt of your application after the deadline. We will notify you of your status via email six to eight weeks after you submit the application.
What is the STK Foundation’s COVID-19 policy?
For the health of our staff and other residents in the shared space, we ask that residents not travel if they are ill. We will ask residents to test for COVID when they show up and strongly suggest residents test before they travel.
Can I bring my significant other?
No.
Do you require references?
Yes, but they will not be contacted until the final rounds of admission, so there’s no need to bother anyone for letters.
What if I want to explore a new writing form but don’t have a writing sample in that genre?
That’s certainly okay with us. The residency is an ideal time to try something new with your writing.
What if I write with a collaborator? Can we apply as a team?
As of now, no. The cohorts are too small to accommodate teams.
Are the dates for the residencies flexible?
They are not.
What if I’ve never been published?
Unless explicitly stated so in the applicant requirements, you do not have to be published.
How many writers apply? How many residencies are awarded?
Because this is our first year, we don’t know how many writers will apply. There are four writers for each cohort.
Do you read each application you receive?
Yes, we do. The applications are read by members of the foundation and by outside readers who are successful working writers.
Does The STK Foundation accept applications from writers who speak English but write in a language other than English?
As of now, no. We don’t have the means to evaluate writing samples that are not written in English.
What can I do to make my application stand out?
Send your best work, and don’t wait until the last minute of the application deadline to send it. While we do consider past accomplishments, the writing sample is the primary consideration for admission.
What can I do to make my application stronger?
Follow the instructions. Closely.
What are the most common mistakes on applications?
People often send more writing than requested. We will not read beyond the word limit stated in the application guidelines.
Can the STK Foundation provide feedback on my application?
We cannot provide feedback
Will the STK Foundation notify me if my application has been disqualified?
We will notify you of your status six to eight weeks after you submit your application. If your application is denied, we cannot inform you as to why.
What is your policy regarding smoking and drinking?
As stated in the general description, neither is allowed on the property.
Do I have to share a bedroom or bathroom?
No. You will have your own bedroom and your own bathroom.
Do I need a car?
You do not need a car, but one might come in handy for daytrips or if you choose to shop. Downtown is close enough that most people can walk there.
Is the kitchen allergen free?
The kitchen is NOT allergen free.
Is this residency for horror writers only?
No.
What if I don’t meet the qualifications for any of the cohorts?
There will be different and more cohorts in 2027.
Are there quiet hours?
Yes. Generally, 10 PM to 9 AM are considered quiet hours. Certain bedrooms are better suited for night owls, while other are better for early birds, so we consider all residents’ schedules before assigning rooms. The mansion is large and the cohorts are small, so other than the kitchen at mealtimes, it’s a pretty quiet residency.
Do you accept applications from outside the US?
Yes! In fact, we include the stipend to make that possible.
