Writers' Residency

The Stephen and Tabitha King Foundation invites applications for ten-day writing residencies in the Brown Mansion in the Whitney Park Historic District of Bangor, Maine. The dual aims of the residencies are to provide writers with time and a comfortable place to work, as well a chance to engage with the local community. Small, specialized cohorts ensure both intimacy and privacy, as well as the ideal conditions to write. The Mansion, with its extensive book collection, parlors, and living spaces lends itself to both casual socializing and serious work.

The Second Empire home is located next door to the renowned Stephen King House and offers residents their own bedrooms, bathrooms, and spacious common living areas, as well as a large stocked kitchen, and nightly dinners. In addition, residents are awarded a $2500 honorarium to cover travel or to be used as they see fit. The hope is that writers will apply, regardless of their financial status or their location. Bed and bath linens as well as basic personal sundries (shampoo, soap, etc.) are provided, and there are laundry facilities available on the premises.

The residence is easily accessible from I-95 or from Bangor International Airport, which is 2.6 miles away. The property abuts Hayford Park, which features sports fields and an aquatic center during the summer months. There are many top-rated and innovative dining opportunities in nearby Downtown Bangor, as well as shopping and entertainment venues. While the kitchen is stocked for every cohort, there are several large supermarkets in Bangor should a resident have very specific dietary needs that we cannot accommodate.

Many house rules are covered in the FAQ section, but it should be noted here that smoking or vaping of any kind, alcohol consumption, and illegal drug use are prohibited on the property.
